On-line Professional Development

On-line Course Administration Policy
Effective September 1, 2011

1.0 Registering for a course

You can register online for Aboriginal Financial Management (AFM) courses, and Certified Aboriginal Public Administrator (CAPA) courses on our website: www.afoa.ca

2.0 Course Registration

Any student registering for an AFOA online course for the first time will be permitted to register for only one course in the first semester. Students may only register for multiple courses in subsequent semesters at the discretion of AFOA, however, in such cases it remains strongly recommended for students to register for only one course per semester as AFOA is aware of the challenges students face while balancing their personal and professional lives while taking AFOA courses.

Upon receiving a course registration, AFOA will forward an e-mail to students confirming registration in the chosen course. The e-mail will include the course fee invoice/receipt, the AFOA Canada Online Course Policy, Student Integrity Policy, Course Withdrawal Form, information on orientation, and AFOA Membership Application Form.

AFOA requires that course payments be received in full by the semester start date. If payment is not received by a semester start date, on-line course access will not be granted.

The deadline to register for AFM 3: Business Law, or AFM 6: Aboriginal History and Developments, is five business days before the semester start date as this will allow adequate time for the required textbooks for these courses to be shipped to the student. Course fee payments must be received for AFM 3 and AFM 6 before the required textbooks are forwarded to the student.

3.0 Course Orientation

Approximately two weeks before a semester start date, AFOA will forward to the student the orientation information/guide for the course in which the student is registered.  The guide offers step-by-step assistance on how to successfully navigate the online course portal.

All students new to an AFOA online course are strongly encouraged to participate in an orientation session. Please contact the Education Program Coordinator via email or by calling 1-866-722-2362 ext. 115 to schedule an orientation.

4.0 Accessing the AFOA Online Site

AFOA online courses are delivered on the AFOA website at www.afoa.ca. The user name and password is chosen by each student at the time of registration. This username and password will only allow access to the course in which the student is registered.

It is the responsibility of each student to provide their own computer system and Internet access to the AFOA online courses for which they are registered.

Students require “full access” to the Internet – including the ability to upload and download both Microsoft Word and PDF files – and access to a web browser. “High-speed” internet access is recommended.  The course administrator is available during AFOA Canada regular business hours weekdays from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm (EST) to assist students with online navigation, and Education program related questions. Instructors will advise students of their preferred office hours each semester, students will be provided with instructor contact information for questions relating to course work. AFOA Canada is not responsible for system problems generated outside of the AFOA Canada server and Internet provider, or personal computer problems.

5.0 Scheduling

AFOA Canada reserves the right to alter, reschedule or cancel an AFOA Online course at any time. Students will be notified of any cancellations prior to the course start date.  Those registered for a course cancelled will be given the option of a full refund of course fees or credit towards another course, not including interest.

6.0 Fees

AFOA membership is not a requirement for course registration although course fees are based on AFOA Canada membership status.  AFOA Canada members are offered course registration at a discounted rate. Should a non-member wish to register for a course as a member, the membership registration form and payment must be received before the individual is eligible for the reduced course fee offered to members.

All course fees are subject to applicable taxes unless AFOA Canada is provided with appropriate proof of exemption. All fees include access to the material, instruction, and evaluation of assignments submitted.

Payment methods include personal or corporate cheque, or major credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Amex). There will be a charge of $37.50 plus applicable taxes for NSF cheques.

8.0 Withdrawal Options

Once the course starts:
For students who feel that they are unable to complete the course during a session, a signed withdrawal form must be completed by the student and submitted to AFOA Canada. If the withdrawal form is submitted before the 7th week of the semester is completed, the student will be eligible for a refund minus a $250 plus applicable taxes administration fee. The student will receive a VW (Voluntary Withdrawal) on their AFOA transcript. If the student wishes to take the course again, full course fee payment would be required and the student must take the entire course from the beginning.

For students who withdraw from the course after the 7th week of the semester is completed a signed withdrawal form is also required however no refund will be given after the 7th week. The student will receive a VW (Voluntary Withdrawal) on their AFOA transcript. If the student wishes to take the course again, full course fee payment would be required and the student must take the entire course from the beginning.

9.0 Completion of the course

Students are responsible for submitting their assignments to the course instructor on or before the assigned due date.

It is the responsibility of each student to seek advice/help from the Education Program Coordinator and/or instructor where required.

Enrollment in any AFOA Online course session may be limited to ensure ample opportunity for full participation of all students.

Upon completion of the course, all students will be issued an official transcript.

Final grades are recorded in the AFOA Canada database as a pass/fail and final percentage achieved.

Final grades less than the acceptable passing percentage (65%) will be recorded as a fail.
Students who do not meet the required 65% for a passing final grade in a course are eligible for a 20% discount of the total course fee for that course if they wish to attempt the course again. Only those students who actually complete a course are eligible for the discount; students who receive a DNC (did not complete) are not eligible for the 20% discount and must pay the course fee in full upon re-enrollment.

10.0 Textbook Buyback Program

Students who participate in courses which require textbooks have the option to purchase the textbooks themselves or purchase the textbooks from AFOA Canada at the time of registration.
AFOA will have textbooks that are both new and used (used textbooks will be available at a discounted rate of 25%).

At the end of the semester, should the student wish to sell their textbook back to AFOA Canada and the textbook is still the current edition being used and in excellent shape, AFOA Canada will at its discretion purchase the textbook back from the student and reimburse the student up to 50% of the original purchase price.

10.1 Book Buyback Terms and Condition:
By using the AFOA book buyback program, you agree to these Terms of Use.

Once your textbook(s) is received by AFOA, you will receive a shipment acknowledgment email and you will be provided with the funds (in Canadian Dollars) for your total sale, provided the textbook(s) is in an acceptable condition in the payment option you chose in the AFOA Sell Your Textbooks payment section.

AFOA reserves the right in its sole discretion to reject any used textbook received that does not meet AFOA’s quality standards. Used textbook(s) that have stains of any sort, disfigurement due to water/fluid exposure, missing, torn or loose pages/cover, broken spine/binding, or any other significant damage that would prevent AFOA in its sole discretion from reselling the textbook(s), will not qualify for the AFOA Book Buyback Program. For any textbook that does not meet AFOA's quality standards, AFOA will notify you via email using the email address you provided and allow you the option of having the book returned to you at your cost. Rejected textbook(s) will be held for up to one (1) week from the date AFOA notifies you of such rejection and will be permanently discarded if you have not made arrangements prior to the end of the one (1) week timeframe.

AFOA is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged textbooks. The postage paid label provided by AFOA does not insure your package or provide any type of delivery confirmation. Should you want to insure your package or receive proof of delivery, you will be responsible for purchasing those additional services and the costs of such additional services will be your responsibility.
